A Petition to the Congress of the United States
No More HMOs -  Let’s Build a Better System

We, the undersigned, do hereby plead and petition the members of the Congress of the United States the following:

That the form of health care financing in the United States, commonly known as corporate health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and other forms of “managed care” must be wholly replaced as quickly as possible, for the following reasons:

  • That this nation's practice of medicine has been corporatized, creating a system in which the needs of the patient are no longer the primary focus.

  • Being forced to bend their Hippocratic Oath, many physicians now follow corporate dictates on medical care, fearing the loss of HMO contracts (patients) if they stray.

  • That this has created a breach of medical ethics, resulting in the destruction of the quality core of American medicine.

  • That we, as citizens and residents of the United States, demand the freedom to choose all of our own physicians and other clinicians based on their abilities and skills, rather than being assigned to a "gatekeeper," who is given financial incentives (capitation and other incentives) not to refer or to perform adequate diagnostic testing or therapeutic procedures.

  • That the above system of managed care be abolished, as it creates a conflict of interest between patient and clinician.

  • That HMO policies have resulted in the sacrifice of patients, who have suffered agonizing pain, life-threatening worsening of mental disorders and, in too many cases, death because a cold-blooded and monstrous decision was made, directly or indirectly, by an HMO executive to deny patients the life saving diagnostic procedures and therapy that they deserved.

  • That there be a new beginning, where new alternative ideas on health care financing will be presented to Congress, unimpeded by corporate HMOs, with their legions of lobbyists and unlimited funds, which have been used to block meaningful patient protection legislation.
