How to Publicize Your Event

Click here for a late breaking GREAT idea!

Each RHCD event needs at least 500, 1000 or more people to attend if you want to make waves and really create change.  The media, business, and legislators are interested in big numbers - really big numbers.

THINK GRANDIOSE - GRANDIOSE THINKING GETS YOU BIG RESULTS:  Unfortunately if you strive for 100 people, you will get 50-75. No one will know you met and despite your hard work, you will not influence those in power. If you strive for 500, 1000, or 3000 people, you will get hundreds or thousands at your event.  If you strive for 10,000 - 20,000 attendees, you will get 5000-10,000 or more.

Small towns should strive for 500 attendees.  Small cities should strive for 3000-5000 or more attendees.  Large cities should strive for 10,000 - 20,000 or more people and will get 5000, 10,000 or more!  How?  Copy and paste the instructions below and distribute them along with a copy of the flyer for your local event.

If there is no local event in your area, print out the sections below that explain RHCD and mention the Post Card effort and snail mail and e-mail to everyone you know as per the instructions.  Ask each person you contact to form a chain letter by copying your mailing about RHCD and the post cards and send it on to another 10, 20, 30 or 100 other people right away (no money is involved, so its a legal chain letter!).

If there is a local RHCD rally in your area, copy the instructions below and mail them with the flyer for your local event.  See RHCD Updates and information to contact the organizers in your area and obtain a copy of the local flyer.  Organizers:  There are two great flyers that can be adapted to your event.  For one designed by Joyce and Judy Bronow and Chuck Goodman, contact Chuck Goodman at 818-718-6024 or Padi200@aol.com.  Chuck can put your local information into the flyer and mail you a copy.  Also, Janet Susin designed a flyer for the Long Island rally and I am sure she would be willing to share it with you for you to adapt.  Contact her at ASusin@aol.com.

There are certain things that must be in your flyer to attract people.  Large Letters for the title RESCUE HEALTH CARE DAY and APRIL 1, 2000 and the main points of the flyer.  Main points are phrases like:  Stop the Suffering!   End the Hoax of HMOs!  End Managed Care!  Don't Let Your Family be the Next HMO Victims!  Don't Let Your Family be the Next Victim of Managed Care Greed!  Bring the Whole Family - Health Care is a Family Affair!  No More:  Limited Choice of Doctors / Drive-through Hospitalizations / Restrictions on Needed Care (set this in a visually attractive way).  Join the Nationwide Protest!   April Fool's Day Protest Rally - End the HMO/Managed Care Hoax!  Choose a few of the above.     Do not clutter the flyer with any more words, explanations, or statements than are necessary, or people will not read it.

Make sure you clearly state the place and time of the RHCD event or rally.  If it is outdoors, state "Rain or Shine".

FLYERS MUST BE DISTRIBUTED IMMEDIATELY!   ACT NOW!!!  THE INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOW.  PLEASE COPY AND MAIL WITH THE FLYER.

 RESCUE HEALTH CARE DAY

APRIL 1, 2000

IMMEDIATE ATTENTION NECESSARY

COPY, MAIL, AND POST!

YOU are needed to help move America toward a health care system in which all people can make their own health care decisions, in private, with their chosen clinicians.  Corporate managed care has not led to "better quality at less cost."  Lists of "preferred" doctors, pressure on doctors to limit care, decisions about your family's care made by your insurance company, too few nurses in our hospitals, drive-through operations and deliveries – these things can no longer be tolerated!

America is joining together to protest HMOs and other managed care and to begin a national dialogue on replacing this system with something better. Rescue Health Care Day (RHCD) is being observed all over the nation, and there is a RHCD event in our area.  Help make our local rally a big part of the national protest.  Please follow the instructions to COPY, MAIL, AND POST:

1.   COPY AND MAIL the flyer and these instructions to every person you know in our area (see the location of the RHCD event on the enclosed flyer).  Mail to everyone - friends, relatives, colleagues, doctors, therapists, your bowling league, your bridge club, your college class, etc.  Send a minimum of 10, but do 20, 30 or 100 if you can.... or more.  No upper limit!  And ask each person to COPY, MAIL AND POST by including a copy of these instructions along with the flyer.

2.  COPY AND MAIL the flyer and these instructions to every organization you can think of in our area.  Mail to at least 10 organizations, but do 20, 30 or 100 if you can...or more!  No upper limit.  If an organization receives more than one from several people, that's great - it will tell them this is important and make them more likely to act!     Ask each organization to POST the flyer on their bulletin board and to MAIL a copy of the flyer and instructions to each of their members right way.  Ask each member to copy and post the flyer and copy and mail the instructions and flyer as far and wide as possible.

Mail to:

    A) Every consumer and professional group, every clinic, in every area of medical care, mental health, nursing, dentistry, chiropractic, podiatry, physical therapy, etc.

    B) Every church, mosque, Quaker meetinghouse, and synagogue

    C) Every union, labor organization

    D) Every Community Service organization - Kiwanis, Lion's Club, Boy and Girl Scouts, Knights of Columbus, Veterans Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, UJA, B'nai B'rith, PTA's, Service Clubs, etc.

3.       COPY AND POST the flyer all over the neighborhood.  Post at least 10, but to do 20, 30 or 100 or more if you can!  No upper limit!  Where?

A) Place a stack of them at your office or place of work.  Keep the stack refreshed.

B) Post all over the neighborhood - Supermarkets, libraries, at work, storefront windows, any bulletin board anywhere!

HOW ELSE CAN YOU MAKE RESCUE HEALTH CARE DAY A SUCCESS?

CALL YOUR LOCAL RADIO STATIONS.  Ask them to announce the local event, its purpose, and the day, time and place as a Public Service Announcement (PSA) in the two or three weeks preceding April 1st.

CALL YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER.  Ask them to cover the RHCD event in your area.

PLACE AN AD IN ANY LOCAL NEWSPAPER OR CONSUMER CIRCULAR.  Announce the event and invite people and families to come.  Gear the ad to people who have been hurt by their HMOs or who are frustrated with lists of doctors and having someone they don't know make health care decisions for them and their family.

POSTCARDS: In addition, each individual should send a post card on April 1st to their two U.S. Senators, their one Representative in the House, and to their State legislators.  The message is simple - adapt it if you wish:  "I am writing on April 1st, Rescue Health Care Day (RHCD), which is being observed all over America.  All Americans should be able to make their own health care decisions, in private, with their chosen clinicians.  No more corporate profit and control over health care.  End managed care!"

You can find the names and addresses of all your legislators by calling your County Election Board or the League of Women Voters in your area.

SEND FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THIS NATIONAL EFFORT:  Mail a generous check to The National Coalition of Mental Health Professionals and Consumers, P. O. Box 438, Commack, NY 11725.  The National Coalition originated the idea for Rescue Health Care Day, and has worked along with Physicians Who Care, their cosponsor, to help change the country through RHCD.

As RHCD works almost solely on volunteer power, each person needs to take responsibility to act.  Don't wonder if someone else is doing it.  Just do it.

Go to the Mall!!!
Ron Bronow and friends are going to take a stack of flyers and hand them out at the mall.
Go to your copy center, have a stack of 1000 flyers made.
Copy them on a brightly colored paper and go spend an hour at the mall.
Ask people if they love or hate their HMO! And hand them a flyer.
Ron said that he and his friends are going to don white coats for their mall caper.
My guess is that you'll have fun and may even meet a few consumers who would want to go to the rally and tell what happened to them or their family!
